Your eyes are one of the few things that a stranger will notice about you. Everyday stresses, inadequate sleep, frequent rubbing of eyes or a drinking binge – any of these will leave you with dark circles. Sometimes, the cause may even be hereditary. You don’t have to grin and bear them though. Here’s what you can do about it:

  • Cold Compress: A cold washcloth or a bag of frozen peas will work wonders if you apply it daily. Even cucumber slices are a great option, because they are cool.
  • Pillows: Try elevating your head by adding a few extra pillows. This will prevent excess fluid retention in your face.
  • Laser treatment: If you’re willing to go that far and spend that much, it is a great option. Removes the problem once and for all.
  • Sunglasses: Try to never go out in the sun unprotected. Sun rays can both tan the skin and cause premature ageing. Cover your eyes with sunglasses all the time.
  • Antihistamines: If the reason behind your eyes looking dull is an allergy, talk to your doctor about possible over the counter anti-allergic drugs.
  • Cosmetics: The best option is concealing them with makeup. There are a lot of great options that you can use. Most women are familiar enough with makeup to know what suits them and looks best on them.

The best ones that help are:

  • A lightweight sunscreen cum moisturiser with SPF 25 or above will go a long way in protecting the areas around your eyes. After all, not wearing sunscreen will result in an overproduction of the skin pigment melanin which will result in dark circles

  • Try a skin brightener twice a day which will lighten the dark circles  and brighten the shadowed areas under the eye.
  • A concealer will help make you look young. You just need to find the perfect one. A great concealer will have
    • A matte finish because it will last longer and look better compared to one that has a creamy or greasy finish.
    • Colour must not be too dark, but not so light that it looks like a white mask.
    • Liquid highlighter after concealer will keep the light away from shadowed areas.

  • A moisturiser full of brilliant ingredients that fight dry skin, discolorations, environmental damage and pollution works for the eye too. The eye area doesn’t need any special ingredients. Also, try to use the emollient moisturiser during the night as using it during the day will make the foundation and concealer slip into lines which might make you look older than you are.

  • If your culprit is sun damage, try using a well formulated product that has Vitamin C in it as that is a great skin brightener.
