A sty is basically an infection that occurs in the oil glands of the eyelids. This infection results in a firm and red lump on the eyelid. This eventually gets filled up with pus and therefore, causes pain.

Sties happen due to dirt, makeup or any other particle that blocks and infects the oil gland with bacteria.

Besides, people suffering from a condition called blepharitis are also at a high risk of getting a sty. This is because this condition causes inflammation in the eyelash follicles. Other factors leading to a sty include poor hygiene, hormonal imbalance and stress.

Generally, a sty looks like a pimple on the eyelid as it gets filled with pus. It usually erupts on the outer edge of the eyelid but can hamper the inner region too.

Those suffering from sties face symptoms like pain, tenderness, swelling, burning sensation, itching, difficulty in blinking, sensitivity towards light and mucus discharge.

Usually a sty infection subsides in two to three days. But there are several home-based treatments, which can help in healing the symptoms of this infection.

  1. Green Tea

Green tea is known for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties, which reduce pain and inflammation caused during a sty infection. Besides, green tea is also a rich source of tannic acid that is helpful in warding off infections. Green tea also contains antioxidants, which further am at providing quick relief.

Just dip a green tea bag in lukewarm water for a few minutes. Later remove and drain out the excess water. Now close your eyes and place this tea bag on top of the affected area. Do it for five minutes and repeat it at least three times in a day. A regular application will help in reducing the size of the sty.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric is a natural anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredient known universally. That is why it is quite effective in healing a sty infection.

Just take a tablespoon of turmeric powder in two cups of water and bring it to boil. Once the solution is reduced to half, let it cool down. Apply this decoction on the affected area with a cotton swab. Repeat it for three times in a day.

Alternately, you can consume a glass of turmeric milk as well. Just add half a teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk and then, drink it before hitting the bed.

  1. Coriander Seeds

Coriander seeds are surely a popular kitchen ingredient but lesser did we know that they are helpful in treating sty infections too. It is so because they possess anti-inflammatory properties. These help in reducing pain, swelling and redness.

To use them, just add one teaspoon of coriander seeds in one cup of water and then, bring it to a boil. Remove the pot from the flame and then, let it cool down. Strain and then dab some of this decoction on the affected area using a cotton ball. Follow the procedure at least thrice a day.

  1. Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is another great healing agent for various types of skin ailments. It contains soothing, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Thus, it possesses the ability to reduce redness, inflammation and swelling.

All you need to do is scoop out some gel from a fresh aloe leaf. Apply this gel over the infected eyelid. Allow it to sit for about 20 minutes and then, rinse off the affected area with lukewarm water. Do it twice a day for at least five days.

  1. Castor Oil

Castor oil is a rich source of ricinoleic acid, which contains anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, castor oil is helpful in reducing sty symptoms like pain, swelling, redness and inflammation.

Just wash the affected eye using a baby shampoo and lukewarm water. Then apply a warm compress on the affected eye for at least five minutes. Later, dab some castor oil with a clean cotton ball n the lump. Do it daily for a few days.
