When essential oils are used to burn candles, these candles serve to elevate moods and alter the ambiance of the environment in which they are being burnt in addition to the fact that they have healing and soothing properties.

  • What are Essential Oils

Essential oils are extracted from the shrubs, roots, leaves, stems, flowers, barks or the stems of plants and are highly concentrated with strong fragrances. They find common use in medicines, soaps, perfumes and flavorings and is the only way by which candles can be scented naturally.

  • Essential Oils in Candles

The trait of humans to associate scents with particular memories is very powerful and is the reason why some scents attract us and to some we have an aversion. Using essential oils while burning candles in our home contributes to distinct aromas which are associated with them. There are also many medicinal, homeopathic and therapeutic benefits that we acquire by burning candles with these essential oils as they contain the same healing properties that they had when they were in plant forms.

  • Healing Properties of Candles with Essential Oils
  • Lavender is known for its calming effect. So, after a hard day at work, if you need something soothing and relaxing, burn a candle which is made with pure lavender essential oil. Lavender oil candles are also very effective in treating insomnia and can help you to relax and sleep better.

  • If you are depressed or are having symptoms of anxiety, use pure bergamot essential oil candles. They can immediately help to uplift your mood and reduce the symptoms along with any illness which has been caused due to them.
  • Citronella and lemongrass essential oils are great insect repellants. They can be used outdoors when you are entertaining or any place where you want to be free of the bugs. Another essential oil which is gaining popularity as a powerful insect repellant is lemon eucalyptus.

  • Peppermint is very effective in reducing congestion and is also used during fever and nausea. Use peppermint to help you open your sinuses and relieve you from the discomfort of congestion.
  • Use Eco-Friendly Candles

The only wax which has natural occurrence on earth, beeswax candles are non-toxic and non-polluting. They are very effective in cleaning the indoor air of allergens and odors, giving a faint whiff of honey when they are burning.

Soy candles are eco-friendlier than conventional candles, burn longer and are superior as far as fragrances and additives go in comparison to their conventional counterparts.

  • Make Your Own Candles
  • Take 10 unscented candles in a pot and heat it on a burner.
  • After the candles melt, take a tweezer and take out the wicks from the pot.
  • Remove the pot from the burner.
  • Pour 10 – 12 drops of your favorite essential oil into the pot and stir the melted wax.
  • If you want to change the color of the candles use the appropriate colored dye.
  • Take a wick, twirl it around a pen and balance the pen on the jar opening. The wick should be allowed to hang inside the jar.
  • Unravel the pen from the wick. Take 2 medium sized jars and pour the melted wax into it.
  • Allow the wax to mold and take the form of candles before you light them to infuse your house with the sweet fragrance of your home-made aromatherapy candles.
