When children face some kind of problem, the heart of the parents or any other person, for that matter, goes out to them. The voice of children is the most loved and sometimes the most tiring thing that one can ever come across with. But problem such as mouth ulcers forbid the children from speaking their hearts out. Not only this, it also creates problem in eating and drinking which in turn affects their health.

Mouth ulcers are the white or yellow colored open sores in the inside of the mouth enclosed with an inflamed red boundary. They generally appear in the inside of the lips, cheeks, under the tongue, on the gums and base/ floor of the mouth.

Mouth ulcers are of different types:

  • Minor Ulcers

These are the commonly occurred type of ulcers. Caused in 80% of the cases, they tend to heal within 7 to 10 days. These are the small and singular ulcers caused in the mouth.

  • Major Ulcers

These types of ulcers are also called large ulcers and they occur in the 10% of the cases. They are very painful as they merge with adjacent ulcers and form a group of ulcers which is large.

Every other problem caused in the body has some or the other reason. So does Ulcer. Let us look at the causes of ulcers:

  1. Unhygienic Dental conditions
  2. Deficiency in nutrition like Vitamin B12, iron and Vitamin C
  3. Acidity
  4. Accidental bites in the mouth and the cheek
  5. Food allergies

The problem comes later but the body detects its arrival way before. The symptoms of ulcers are:

  1. Pain
  2. Redness
  3. Irritability
  4. Soreness
  5. Fever or headache
  6. Swelling

Ulcer can generally be treated by various organic and anti-biotic medicines.

But home remedies are the best to give it to babies as their body readily accepts easy and low-dose medication as compared to the high one.

  • Liquid Antacids

Liquid antacids are very good for the treatment of ulcers. If given 4 times a day, a teaspoon (5 mL) to the children above 4 years of age as a mouthwash after meals and half a teaspoon (2.5 mL) to the children below 4 years of age as an ointment rubbed over the area affected by ulcers can prove as a useful cure.

  • Coconut milk with Honey

Coconut is extremely beneficial to cure ulcers. Mix a little amount of honey in one teaspoon of coconut milk and rub it over the affected area thrice or four times a day.

  • Coconut Oil

Apply coconut oil on the affected area as many times in the day as you can so as to reduce the stinging sensation of ulcers.

  • Poppy Seeds

Ulcers are caused in the mouth due to the excess amount of heat in the body and thus take the form of ulcers to go out of the body, according to Ayurveda. And Poppy seeds are known to have a very a soothing and cooling effect which counteracts the heat caused by the ulcers, thus acting as the best remedy to overcome this problem.

  • Liquorice

Liquorice has a number of medicinal properties. Available in both stem pieces as well as in powder form, it provides relief in the case of mouth ulcers as they inhibit anti-inflammatory properties which work against the flaming sensation caused by ulcers.

  • Gargle with water

One glass of cold/ chilled water and one glass of lukewarm water should be used to gargle with, so as to cure the mouth ulcers efficiently.

  • Coriander seeds

Ayurvedic remedies prove beneficial for everyone. Coriander seeds thus bring with them a wave of relief and curb the inflammation occurring during the time of mouth ulcers.

Boil a teaspoon of coriander seeds in a cup of water and then allow it to cool. Swish it around the mouth and repeat the process three to four times a day.

Thus, the next time your baby has this problem, you have the solution to cure it already.
