Breast pain, often referred to as mastalgia, is quite a common problem among women, particularly when they are menstruating. As per a report of California Pacific Medical Center, breast pain happens to almost 70 per cent women.

Some of the common symptoms of breast pain are heaviness, tenderness, soreness, stabbing pain and swelling. The intensity and frequency of the pain might differ from woman to woman. Breast pain basically classifies into two types. The first one being Cyclical in which the intensity of the pain keeps on changing during periods. Also, this pain occurs due to hormonal changes. The other type is Non-cyclical. This type of pain does not change its intensity and is associated with factors like structure of breasts, cysts, trauma and any prior surgery.

Well, there are several remedies for treating the breast pain, which occurs due to menstrual cycle and not any type of medical condition.  Let us have a look at a few of them.

  1. Evening Primrose Oil

Evening primrose oil is quite effective in treating breast pain. This is due to the presence of gamolenic acid, which is basically a kind of fatty acid that ensures that the body accepts the hormonal changes without much effort. This in turn helps in easing the pain.

Just apply a few drops of evening primrose oil on your breasts and massage gently. Alternately, you can take 240 to 500 mg of evening primrose oil extract regularly for around three months. However, do consult your doctor before doing it. A word of caution; do not apply this oil if you are planning pregnancy or have epilepsy.

  1. Ice Pack

Ice pack is also an amazing remedy for easing breast pain during periods. The cold temperature of the ice basically numbs the area and thus, reduces pain and swelling.

Put a few ice cubes in a plastic bag and then, wrap it with a piece of cloth. Now apply the ice pack to your breasts for at least 10 minutes. Do it a couple of times in a day to get some relief. A warm compress can also be useful in this regard. Just make sure that you do not apply ice on your breasts directly.

  1. Castor Oil

Owing to the presence of ricinoleic acid, castor oil is helpful in easing breast pain. This acid possesses analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, essential for relieving pain. Castor oil helps in increasing circulation, which further ensures that nutrients reach your breast and inflammation-causing waste products are flushed out.

All you need to do is add one tablespoon of castor oil in two tablespoons of olive oil. Mix well and then, massage your breasts with it. Do it regularly a week prior to your periods.

Castor oil is helpful in relieving several stomach woes too.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a superb ingredient used for treating several types of ailments. Therefore, it can ease breast pain too. It helps in flushing out the toxins from the body and thus, reduces water retention and balances hormones. This way, it can ease tenderness and pain in breasts.

Mix two teaspoons of unfiltered apple cider vinegar in a glass of lukewarm water. Stir in a spoon of honey and then, drink it. Consume this solution daily during your menstrual cycle.

  1. Fennel

Fennel is often associated with easing pain. It also helps in reducing tenderness in breasts during menstruation. It basically balances hormones and thus prevents retention of water. This way it does not allow buildup of toxins in the body.

Drop in a teaspoon of fennel seeds in one cup of hot water and then, cover it with a lid. After 10 minutes, strain and drink it. Do it a few times in a day.

Besides, chewing a teaspoon full of roasted fennel seeds is also helpful in easing pre-menstrual syndrome symptoms such as breast pain.
