Skin abrasions are very common. Sometimes scraping your leg against a table or scratching due to an insect bite can lead to abraded skin. This occurs when there is a wound to the skin which does not run deeper than the epidermis and the upper layer of the skin rubs away after coming in contact with a rough surface.

When a skin abrasion occurs, we often dismiss it as a minor wound and don’t pay particular attention to treat it. However it is important to treat it properly to avoid any further infection from developing and spreading. Here are some easy tips on treating skin abrasions with ingredients that can be easily found at home.

  1. Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe vera is known for its anti-septic, anti-inflammatory, cooling and skin repairing properties. It holds many uses in skin care and beauty treatments and is a very effective remedy for skin abrasions. Apply the aloe vera gel directly on the affected area and leave it on. Do this two to three times a day till the wound heals. Aloe vera is also very moisturizing and prevents the wound from becoming dry and itchy and promotes healing of the skin.

  1. Honey

Honey is also a great healer for abraded skin. It has anti-septic and anti-bacterial properties which treat the wound and prevent any infections from developing on the affected area. Applying honey on the wound is also an effective and convenient way to prevent scarring after the wound has healed. Apply some organic honey on the wound and cover it up with a bandage. After an hour, remove the bandage and wash the area with warm water. Do this regularly till the skin heals.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric is an ancient remedy for all sorts of ailments and problems. One of these includes skin abrasions as well. The natural anti-septic properties clean the wound and prevent any infections. All you need to do is make a paste by mixing a spoonful of turmeric in water and apply it on the wound. Let the application dry naturally on the skin, and you can wash it off during a bath. Do this daily till the skin heals.

  1. Coconut Oil

Applying coconut oil over a wound helps create a barrier that protects the skin from dirt and pollutants from settling in. The layer of oil also moisturizes the skin and prevents scabbing and itchiness. The nourishing properties of the coconut also boost the healing process and can prevent scars and marks from developing. All you need to do is apply a thin layer of coconut oil after your bath on the affected area. Do this 2 to 3 times a day; reapply it once the oil has fully absorbed and you will find the wound healing in no time.

  1. Vitamin E

Vitamin E is rich in antioxidants that accelerate the healing process of the skin. It treats the damaged area and also keeps it free of any infections. In case of deep abrasions, vitamin E oil can also help to prevent scarring. You can apply Vitamin E oil on the abrasion and massage it in for 5 minutes before rinsing it off about 2 or 3 times a day. Wheat germ oil contains Vitamin E and is very good for skin treatments.
