With culture we tend to accept the pain in our joints and consider it as a part of growing old. Most people take pain killers to deal with the pain. Pain killers do help, but only for a certain time. It is therefore important to get hold of the root cause of arthritis. As an illness, arthritis is so varied and spread out that none could believe without exploring it. These days aged as well as middle and young generations are complaining about joint aches as well as stiffness. Along with pain, most people experience inflammation and stiffness.

The swelling is caused by two main reasons. The first being the swelling of the joint lining called synovium or increase in the joint fluid. The blood flow around the joints increases making the joint swell and also feel warm because of excessive blood flow. Along with inflammation one might experience swelling too. Stiffness is experienced by many people in the morning. People experiencing stiffness report a combination of swelling as well as rigidity in the joint not being able to move it. There is a second group of people who say that keeping the joint at rest leads to stiffness, while another handful complain that too much movement leads to stiffness. Thus, from the above complaints it becomes clear that arthritis is of more than one type.

Two major types of arthritis are –

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis

Details of Arthritis

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis – There is swelling in the joints accompanied by warmth, pain, stiffness and redness. This type of arthritis leads to multiple cell growth. The excess cell growth causes the joint fluid to thicken. The cells thus release an enzyme that corrodes the bones and cartilages. The stiffness stays for a long time. RA starts in the smaller bones and then spreads fast. The pain and other symptoms worsen with time.

  • Osteoarthritis- This type of arthritis affects the lower portion of the body like lower back, knee, hips and feet. Osteoarthritis is due to wear and tear and also injury or a combination of all three. Along with swelling, Osteoarthritis also leads to cartilage breakdown also. There is pain experienced in the morning, but however it does not last very long
  • Psoriatic arthritis is related to redness along with inflammation. It affects the knees, ankles, toes and also fingers. Neck and bone aches are also related to psoriatic arthritis.
