Sticky toffee pudding: Sticky toffee pudding is one of the most popular puddings of Britain. It’s basically a cake sponge filled with dates, and it’s served with walnut and jaggery sauce. Sticky toffee pudding can be savored anytime with any meal. Its primary ingredients are chopped dates, butter, grated jaggery, egg, flour, and baking powder. The pudding usually takes one and half hour of preparation time and it tastes better when served warm. Kummayam: Kummayam is a healthy desert prepared with different combination of lentils and jaggery. It’s not only a mouth watering dish but also strengthens your bone. It’s considered to be a healthy food for people of all ages. Ingredients used to make kummayam are green gram dal, urad dal, rice, powdered jaggery, ghee, and water. As jaggery is a natural sweetener, the sweet doesn’t require any additional sugar. Its preparation time is 30 minutes and can be served after meal. However, this delicious sweet can be eaten anytime during the day.
Coconut cookies: These scrumptious coconut cookies have a soft texture inside and moderately chewy outside. It’s easy to bake, and takes approximately 25 minutes to prepare 10 cookies. Dry coconut combined with jaggery and whole wheat gives it a sweet and rich flavor. Ingredients of coconut cookies include whole wheat, dry coconut, baking powder, coconut oil, jaggery, and coconut milk. Cardamom powder and ginger powder are added for flavor. Store the cookies in an air tight jar and serve them with tea.
Jaggery and sugar come from the same source; however, they are quite different in properties. Jaggery is softer than sugar and do not have a definite shape. It contains iron, minerals salts, and fibers that are not present in sugar, and hence jaggery offers more benefits. As a result, jaggery based sweets are preferred by many who are conscious about their health.
