Dandruff is an embarrassing condition that is not easy to treat. It is a condition of the scalp that causes flakes of skin to appear and may be associated with itching. Though the exact cause of dandruff is not known, most experts agree that it is not caused by poor hygiene. Some of the commonest causes of dandruff are:
- Dry Skin: Dry skin is the commonest cause of dandruff. People with dry skin tend to get dandruff more often. Dryness due to winters aggravates the condition. You’ll likely have symptoms of dry skin on other parts of your body like arms and legs.
- Seborrheic Dermatitis: Oily, irritated skin is another common cause of dandruff. The skin is greasy and red and marked by yellow or white flakes. If you have this condition, you will also have these flakes on other oily areas like your breastbone, groin, and armpits.
- Less Shampooing: This theory says that not shampooing enough will cause oil and skin cells to build up in your scalp and cause
- Skin conditions: Some skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis may cause more dandruff.
- Allergies: Allergies can cause rapid dandruff build up and cause more flaking of skin than is normal. This condition is known as contact dermatitis.
- Not brushing/combing Hair enough: Shedding of skin is facilitated by combing and brushing the Hair. Not doing this often enough can cause an accumulation of skin cells and cause dandruff to build up.
- Not enough Zinc: Diet rich in zinc and vitamin B will prevent dandruff build up. Also, try to add fruits to your diet.
- Fatty food: A diet rich in saturated and trans fats will cause your sebaceous glands to work overtime and produce more oil than normal. This will result in flaky skin which will shed off as dandruff.
