There are various myths about baby feeding which parents come across. Most of the times they are not at all true and the parents just go crazy over these ridiculous myths. These myths cause a nightmare to the parents and they end up follows rules which end up harming the baby rather than saving them. Due to these factors parent need to know for a fact which rules they should be following in terms of anything with the baby. Best baby care products have it written on prints that such myths are not real. They shouldn’t believe everything being said to them. Here is some of the craziest baby feeding myths you will come across.
Some babies are allergic to their mother’s milk
This is one of the most common myths out there. While it is easy to misinterpret signs like spitting and vomiting as the baby not being suited to breast milk it is not true. No child on the world is allergic to their mother’s milk. That is biologically impossible. Though some babies can have allergic tendencies to the foods the mother is eating before and after breast feeding. That is a different case though as in general no baby is allergic to their mother’s milk.
Water for breastfed babies
Breastfed babies do not need water. Many parents tend to believe that breastfeeding infants need water as well that is not true. Breast milk is the only food which your baby will need at that stage. Unless your paediatrician recommends giving water do not give your baby that. Unless she starts eating solid food at 4 or 5 months of age water is not needed. Mothers who feed formula to their babies should check with the paediatrician.
Pregnancy while breastfeeding
It is not true that you cannot get pregnant while you breastfeed. Breastfeeding is in no way a reliable source of birth control. She may not become pregnant right at that time but breast feeding doesn’t ensure any guarantee. When the menses resume she will be at risk. She will not be able to conceive a few months after the delivery but after that she has full chances of getting pregnant again.
Skim milk vs Whole milk
There is no truth in the myth that children under the age of 1 should not be switched to low fat or skim milk until school age. You can easily shift to low fat cow milk after age 2. In the past days whole milk was recommended for all young toddlers. This has been revised due to childhood obesity. Babies at risk of being overweight need to start at 2% milk after their first birthday and then switch to 1 % milk when they turn 2. If the baby has a family history of heart disease then the check with your paediatrician. This should be done in case of cholesterol problems as well. Babies should also not be given any kind of cow’s milk till their first birthday.
If you have food allergies, your baby will too.
This is another myth which parents take very seriously. The fact is that your trigger foods may not cause any kind of reaction in your baby’s diet. Certain allergies tend to run in the family but it is not proven that if your child will follow suit on your food allergies. You just need to know what to expect and a matter of better education while being in tune with potential triggers.
Sugar causes hyperactivity.
This is another very common myth which is popular among parents. While it is better to limit the dosage of sugar but it should be done to only crystallise sugar. Children do not get hyperactive due to excess dosage of sugar. It can cause tummy aches but hyperactivity will be a case. In addition to that parents need to feed their child limited amount of sugar based food. But take care of the dental issues. That is something to be worried about but hyperactivity is not.
