As per Ayurveda, cumin is common ingredient used to cure several digestive related problems, such as stomach ache, indigestion, morning sickness, diarrhea, flatulence and nausea.
Basically, cumin promotes the secretion of pancreatic enzymes that further help in good digestion. It acts as acid neutralizer to combat acidity. Owing to its carminative property, cumin reduces gastric woes.
To consume it, all you need to do is add one teaspoon of cumin powder (roasted and then grinded) in a glass of water. Mix well and drink at least twice a day. If you do not like it in water, you can add it to your glass of buttermilk.
At times, your stomach may feel bloated. This happens due to buildup of gas in the stomach, which further makes it stiff. This can also lead to stomach ache and discomfort in the abdomen area.
Bloating can be a result of various reasons, such as constipation, premenstrual syndrome, indigestion and irritable bowel syndrome.
As per a recent study published in Middle East Journal of Digestive Diseases, cumin is quite effective on curing disturbed bowel movement and bloating.
To use it, just boil one cup of water. Now add a pinch each of cumin powder, ginger powder and sea salt. Also add half teaspoon of fennel seeds. Let them all simmer for about five minutes and then, strain. Allow the concoction to cool down before consuming. Do this at least once in a day.
Owing to its carminative and wind-relieving properties, cumin is really helpful in easing colic pain in babies. For consumption, add one teaspoon of cumin seeds in one cup of hot water. Cover it and then leave the water aside for about 15 minutes. Strain the solution and give around two spoons of this water to your baby once in a day. This will surely relive colic pain.
A person suffering from iron deficiency is bound to suffer from anemia sooner or later. Since cumin is a rich source of cumin, its consumption becomes must for anemic patients. Iron basically boosts the production of hemoglobin, which is responsible for transporting oxygen throughout your body through blood. Moreover, iron helps in boosting energy production and metabolism.
One tablespoon of cumin contains around 4 milligrams of iron. Including cumin in daily diet can also help in curing fatigue, anxiety and cognitive malfunction.
Cumin is also beneficial for lactating and would-be mothers. This is due to the presence of iron and calcium in it. It boosts the secretions from mammary glands, which further increase the production of milk.
Also, it provides strength and energy to mothers post delivery. So if you are a lactating mother, make sure you include cumin in your daily diet. Add one spoon of cumin to your glass of milk or add to your porridge and chapattis. Increase its quantity in your curies too. Continue consuming it till you a breastfeeding your baby.
