The beautiful Indo-Canadian actress and model, Lisa Ray, starring in Water (an Oscar Nominated Movie) was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2009, a cancer arising from plasma cells, a type of white blood cell which is made in the bone marrow.

Lisa started with symptoms like tiredness, exhaustion, paleness of the skin and drained energy when she realized that something was wrong. Her haemoglobin levels dropped sharply. Convinced that her body demanded urgent attention, she got a routine blood test done when she was scanned with a rare type of blood cancer.  For someone who was known for her beauty and looks, cancer proved to be a complete dampener. She gained weight, suffered major hair-loss as she was on steroids and chemotherapy treatment.

Being scanned with cancer can be a distressing experience. Cancer can affect our body in several ways, be it physically, spiritually or emotionally. It may cause a range of side effects which will affect our ability to work. These include:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Risk of infection
  3. Nausea and vomiting
  4. Body changes

Lisa Ray had bad days but never got depressed. Hope, support, writing and humour helped her through the journey of treatment. The actress stressed on the need of the strong support system and developing the right attitude. Rising above cancer was through a combination of right treatment, meditation and faith, emotional support and right diet. She was declared cancer-free after eight months of her treatment.

This deadly disease can be prevented by taking certain preventive measures. Lisa suggests avoiding processed food and sugar, eating loads of veggies and exercising daily.

According to Thomas A Sellers, PhD Associate Director, associate director of cancer prevention and control at Moffitt Cancer Centre in Tampa, diet, exercise and avoidance of tobacco are the first line of defence.  Other studies reveal more important preventive measures:

  1. Filter your tap water
  2. Commit to whole grains
  3. Pay attention to pain
  4. Drinking plenty of liquids
  5. Load up on green veggies
  6. Snack on nuts
  7. Exercise daily
  8. Up your calcium intake
  9. Avoid unnecessary scans

Most people in the world would be shaken upon hearing that they are suffering from cancer.  Though there are promising new treatments in the pipeline, we can make certain important lifestyle changes in our lives today in order to prevent catching the deadly disease.
