Acid reflux commonly called acidity is the most common digestive disorder faced mostly by adults. It is a gastro-esophageal disorder which is caused when the stomach acids travel back into the throat. Acidity often causes uneasiness and problem digesting food. It needs to be taken care of else it may lead to ulcers in the stomach. If acid reflux is not cured and taken care of, it may even lead to several infection of the digestive system. The main cause of acid reflux is the malfunctioning of the lower esophageal sphincter. When this sphincter remains open for a longer period of time during the process of digestion, it leads to acids and other contents traveling back into the throat from the stomach causing irritation and uneasiness.

Acid reflux can be cured with the help of over the counter and prescribed medications by the doctor. These medicines may provide instant relief from the problem of acidity. However, one can even try natural products to get rid of acidity. Natural products do not harm the body in any manner and can be consumed as many times as required to get rid of the problem.

The following natural products can help get rid of acid reflux permanently:

  • Basil Leaves: Basil leaves have carminative and soothing properties and can help to get rid of acidity in an effective manner. To get rid of acidity, one can chew a few basil leaves to get control over acidity. A few basil leaves can also be boiled in water and consumed to get rid of acid reflux.

  • Cinnamon: Cinnamon is considered very good for the digestive health. It works as a natural antacid and thus reduces the stomach acids relieving acidity. A pinch of cinnamon can be added to milk or tea and consumed to get rid of acidity.
  • Buttermilk: Buttermilk contains lactic acid that normalizes acids in the stomach and thus helps to get rid of acidity. Plain buttermilk can be consumed several times a day to get rid of acid reflux.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar is acidic in nature but has an alkalizing effect on the stomach. It balances the acid levels in the stomach and thus helps to get rid of acid reflux. To use apple cider vinegar to treat acidity, mix one or two spoons of it in a cup of water and drink it two or three times a day to overcome acidity.
  • Ginger: Ginger has anti-inflammatory properties and so helps to overcome acidity. Ginger also leads to better digestion naturally and neutralizes the acids in the stomach thereby reducing and even preventing acidity. To use ginger for getting rid of acidity, one can chew ginger or take two to three spoons on ginger juice twice or thrice a day.
  • Jaggery: Jaggery aids digestion. Since it becomes alkaline in the stomach after digestion, it balances the acid levels in the stomach thereby reducing and even overcoming acidity. Taking a small piece of jaggery after each meal can help to effectively prevent and get rid of acidity.
  • Fennel: Fennel has carminative properties and aid digestion. The use of fennel therefore helps to get rid of acidity. One can chew on a small quantity of fennel or boil these seeds in water and consume the water twice or thrice a day to get rid of acidity.
  • Cold Milk: Milk is rich in calcium and helps to prevent the build-up of acids in the stomach. It also helps to stabilize gastric acids in the stomach and therefore helps to get rid of acidity. Drinking a small quantity of cold milk can effectively reduce and prevent acidity.

  • Herbal Tea: Herbal teas like chamomile tea, ginger tea, jasmine tea etc. have anti-inflammatory properties helps to reduce inflamed mucous membranes of the digestive tract and therefore help to get rid of acidity. These also aid digestion and help to prevent acid reflux from happening in the first place.
