Plaque is basically a sticky and soft covering of bacteria that gets coated on your teeth, gums, dental fillings, tongue and crowns. Moreover, when several layers of this plaque come in contact with the minerals present in our saliva, it gets converted into a chalky calcified substance known as tartar. So, plaque is basically a breeding ground for oral bacteria, which can further damage our teeth. Also, it results in the formation of acid with hampers the tooth enamel, thus leading to cavities.  There are several factors, which cause the formation of plaque. Some of them are improper oral hygiene, wrong way of brushing, unhealthy food choices and heredity.

Therefore, it is essential to maintain a good oral hygiene. One should brush the teeth at least twice a day. Brushing the tongue is equally important.  Besides regular hygiene, there are several home remedies too that can help in removing this plaque and tartar. To know about them in detail, read on.

  1. Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an age-old remedy to do away with plaque and other dental ailments. You need extra virgin coconut oil for this therapy. Owing to the presence of lauric acid, coconut oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial effects. A recent study published in the Nigerian Medical Journal also shows that oil pulling using coconut oil is quite effective for treating plaque.

Just swish one tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth for about 15 minutes and then, spit out. Make sure you do not gargle or swallow it. Later, brush your teeth with your normal toothpaste. Do this procedure daily for removing plaque. Massaging the teeth with coconut oil can also help in keeping the gums healthy.

  1. Guava

To remove the plaque from teeth, you can also use the fruit and leaves of guava. This fruit possesses anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which further help in reducing the swelling and pain in gums.

As per a 2014 study, guava leaf extract can be helpful in reducing the plaque from the teeth. Guava consists of anti-bacterial property and performs biofilm-inhibition activity against Streptococcus mutans, which are the main cause for plaque.

All you need to do is chew some guava leaves for a few minutes and then, spit them out. A regular usage of these leaves can gradually reduce the formation of plaque. Also, eat a raw guava with some salt sprinkled on it. Have it once in a day.

  1. Baking Soda

Also known as sodium bicarbonate, baking soda is a superb treatment for removing plaque. It basically neutralizes the acids formed in the mouth, which further help in reduction of plaque causing bacteria. 

A study published in The Journal of Clinical Dentistry showed that baking soda paste is a great plaque removing agent when compared to non- baking soda products.

All you need to do is sprinkle a pinch of baking soda on the bristles of your wet toothbrush. Now brush your teeth with it and then rinse the mouth thoroughly with warm water.

Alternately, add two teaspoons baking soda in one teaspoon of salt. Damp your toothbrush and then use this mixture as toothpaste. Rinse your mouth afterwards.

  1. Aloe Vera

Owing to its anti-microbial properties, aloe vera is helpful in getting rid of plaque-causing bacteria. It is also helpful in fighting bad breath. A study also states that aloe vera has similar effect on plaque as chlorhexidine mouthwash.

To use it, just extract its pulp and rub it gently on your teeth and gums. After 10 minutes, rinse your mouth with cold water. Do it twice in a day.

  1. Cloves

Cloves are one of the most common and effective remedies for plaque and other dental woes. They not only provide relief from toothache but also kill the bacteria inside.

To use it, mix one teaspoon of clove powder in a few drops of olive oil. Rub your teeth and gums with this mixture. Let it stay for few minutes and then, rinse off well.
