 DANDRUFF

Dandruff   is a common scalp disorder with excessive shedding of dead skin cells from the scalp. It occurs because of the hyper-activity of the sebaceous gland, dust, excessive exposure to the sun, extreme winters, harsh chemical based shampoos, improper diet and hormonal changes. Excessive flaking can be annoying and can affect once self-esteem. Regular use of some simple home remedies can get rid of dandruff and prevent it from returning.

SYMPTOMS

Dry itchy scalp, scaling of silver flakes, excessive itching can cause redness/acne. For some, dandruff is also seen on eyebrows and eyelashes especially in the morning.

REMEDIES

Coconut oil -Take two tablespoon of coconut oil, heat   the oil, dissolve two pieces of camphor in the hot oil, apply this oil all over the scalp and give a gentle massage. Keep it on for an hour or overnight and wash it off with a mild shampoo. Do this regularly twice a week.

Gooseberry (Amla)-Take two tablespoon of lukewarm coconut oil, add 1 tsp of Amla juice. Apply this mixture on scalp regularly.

Fenugreek (Methi seeds)-Take two tablespoon of coconut oil, add one tablespoon of methi seeds (fenugreek).Heat this mixture. Allow it to be lukewarm. Apply this oil one hour before hair wash. Regular application of this oil will control dandruff and also promotes hair growth.

Lemon-Lemon is another excellent home remedy for dandruff. Heat two tablespoon of coconut oil, add juice of half a lemon. Massage your scalp with this oil .Use the lemon peel to massage. Keep iton for an hour and wash it off with a mild shampoo. This remedy is very effective if done twice a week.

Yogurt-Yogurt has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It also acts as a good conditioner. Apply plain yogurt (homemade/organic).Keep it on for 30 minutes and wash it off with a mild shampoo.
Egg-Take egg white of one egg and two teaspoon lemon juice. Mix well. Apply it to the scalp .Allow the mixture to dry. Wash with a mild shampoo.

Aloe vera- Take a leaf of an aloe vera plant. Squeeze the gel out. If plant is not easily available or hard pressed for time, readymade Organic aloe vera gel is also available in the market. Apply it on the scalp. Keep it for 20 minutes .Wash it with lukewarm water.

Tea tree oil-Add two/three drops of tea tree oil in aloe vera juice or lemon juice apply it to the scalp for 20 minutes before shower. It helps to lubricate the scalp and keep it dandruff free.

Sesame oil-Massage your scalp with sesame oil. Sesame oil nourishes the roots and protects the scalp from drying.

Hibiscus -Hibiscus leaves and flowers (regular red flowers) can be grind together and the strained liquid is used as an excellent shampoo cum conditioner. Use of hibiscus based oils nourishes the scalp and helps balance the natural oils.

PREVENTION

Keep the scalp clean.

Regular oiling is very important to avoid dryness and flaking of the scalp.

Use mild shampoos and use conditioner after every wash.

Eat protein and iron rich food like egg, lentils, green vegetables, fruits etc. Fish oils and omega three fatty acids also helps to balance the moisture level.

Limit your consumption of spicy and tangy food. Excess heat in the body also causes dandruff.

Avoid excessive sun exposure .Too much of sun can drain the natural oil present in the glands and make the hair dry and frizzy.

People suffering from dandruff on their eyelashes can apply warm coconut/sesame oil before going to bed and also in the morning.
