Essential oils not only smell delightful, "but also" their scent uplifts mood, improves concentration, makes a person calm, treats respiratory tract problems, eliminates catarrhal conditions and some of these essential oils also curb hunger cravings. One of the most convenient ways to utilize these essential oils is using an oil burner.

Oil burners are a great way to spread the scent of essential oils gently around your home. They also make your home look beautiful. All you need is fill the bowl with water and add some drops of any essential oil into it and then place a candle underneath it. The aroma of the essential oil will slowly diffuse around your home giving you all the benefits. The following things should be kept in mind while choosing an oil burner:-

  • The saucer should be large, wide and deep.
  • Make sure that the saucer can be removed for cleaning purpose and extinguishing the candle.
  • Make sure that there is some space between the tip of the flame and the bottom of the saucer, to prevent the water from boiling.
  • There should be enough ventilation holes to allow maximum heat and use of the candle.
  • A spacious access point to allow a large candle so that candles can be lit while in place should be provided.

Based on the above tips, you can consider these options:-

While using an oil burner, following precautions must be taken:

    • Keep the oil burner away from the reach of children.
    • Keep the oil burner on a metal coaster to protect against drips.
    • Use a jug filled with boiling water to fill the saucer, add a few drops of essential oil. This will help in saving candle heat.
    • Never leave a naked flame of the candle unattended, burning all night.

The best alternative to oil burner is electricdiffuser. Since there is no candle involved, the diffuser can work all day and night continuously to spread the aroma around your home.

This electric diffuser uses ultrasound to deliver very small sized essential oil droplets so fine that within a moment of leaving the diffuser on, the cool mist becomes a vapor, incorporates into the atmosphere and spreads evenly throughout your room.

Some advantages of electric diffusers are:

    • Eliminates the use of candle.
    • Avoids the use of hot water, which has the potential to burn.
    • The burning temperature does not vary and will not burn dry or overheat. Thus, the aroma will be diffused evenly throughout your home.
    • The burner remains cool to touch.
    • Easy to clean and maintain.  No need to constantly keep a check on the candle.
    • Meets safety standards for use in Hospitals, Nursing homes, offices or homes.  Is safe to use around children.

So, which is better — a burner or a diffuser?

Both of them offer similar benefits.  The main purpose of a burner or a diffuser is to diffuse the scent of essential oils throughout the house and both of them serve this purpose very well. It is the best way to utilize the essential oils. Another advantage of using them is that they reduce the risk of infections because these reduce the percentage of germs present in the air. Both the burner and the diffuser provide a peaceful, calm and relaxing atmosphere inside your house. At the end, it is the quality of the essential oils or essential oil blends that you use, more than the method of diffusing their properties. So, it all depends on your personal preference to chose one of them.
