Depression is a common disorder these days. People often feel sad or low but that is a temporary situation. In case of depression, the situation of feeling low gets permanent. It basically affects the thought process, feelings, mood, behavior and physical health of a person.

A few general symptoms of depression are sadness, dejection, sense of loss, disinterest, low energy, mental trauma, appetite loss and disturbed sleep.

Besides genetic reasons, there are several other factors that contribute to depression. Some of them include anxiety, mental stress, tension, drug addiction and deficiencies of vitamin B-complex and omega-3 fatty acids. As per studies, women are 70 percent more prone to the disorder of depression when compared to men.

Depression can be cured through several therapies and medications. But one can opt for home remedies too. These are safe and do not have any side effects as well. Let us take a look at a few of them.

  1. Cardamom

Cardamom possesses detoxification properties and therefore, rejuvenates the body cells. This way it helps in improving mood and thus, treating depression.

Add half teaspoon of cardamom powder in one cup of lukewarm milk or water. Stir well and drink it at least once in every day. One can also pour in a few drops of cardamom oil in the bath water. Just soak in the uplifting aroma of this cardamom infused bath water for about half an hour.  

 

  1. Honey

The sweetness of sugar can help in boosting mood. Since honey is a rich source of natural sugar, it helps in fighting the symptoms of sugar. Besides, honey helps in relaxing frayed and tensed nerves. The presence of amino acid, named tryptophan in honey also induces sleep. As per studies, good sleep lowers the symptoms of depression.

Just mix one tablespoon of honey and add around 10 crushed almonds to it. Consume one spoon of this concoction two times in a day. Take it once in the morning and the other dose before hitting the bed.

You can also mix together one tablespoon of honey and one teaspoon of ginseng powder. Now pour in a cup of hot water in this mixture. After five minutes, drink this concoction. Consume it at least two times in a day.

  1. Nutmeg

Nutmeg is a wonder spice for treating depression. It is basically a tonic that stimulates the brain, eliminates stress and fatigue, and boosts mood.

All you need to do is add a pinch of nutmeg powder in one tablespoon of amla juice. Just drink this mixture two times in a day to ease the symptoms of depression. However, do not consume nutmeg in excess as it can have psychoactive effect.

  1. Apple

Apples are a rich source of vitamin B, phosphorus and potassium. These nutrients together ensure that the brain repairs damaged nerve cells. This way it boosts the functioning of the brain and thus, fights depression symptoms.

Just blend an apple and extract its juice. Mix it with one tablespoon of honey. Now add this concoction to a cup of lukewarm milk. Consume it for about two times in a day. Eating an apple a day can also fight and even prevent depression.

  1. Saffron

Saffron is a powerhouse of carotenoids and vitamin B, which boost the serotonin level and other chemicals inside the brain. As per a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, it was concluded that saffron is as effective as fluoxetine in bringing down the level of depression.

Consume around 15 mg of saffron in dried extract form two times in a day. Also, you can add saffron in your desserts, shakes or smoothies.

  1. Cashew Nuts

Cashew nuts are a rich source of vitamin C, which helps in stimulating the nervous system. Besides, the presence of riboflavin in cashews promotes the level of energy in the body. Cashews are also rich in nutrients, such as magnesium, tryptophan and vitamin B6, which are helpful in fighting depression.

All you need to is add one teaspoon of cashew nut powder in one cup of lukewarm milk. Consume it once in a day.
