LET IT FLOW:

One of the most important properties of massage oils should be viscosity. The oil should be viscous, which means that it should not be dense and should flow easily on the skin. While performing a massage, it is necessary to avoid any friction. Hence, good oils will provide the necessary lubrication required to nullify any friction effects that may occur and thus enables swift gliding movements. It should also be absorbed into the skin at a considerably quick rate.

HYDRATE:

Good massage oils should leave your skin feeling soft and supple. The best way to do that is if it seals the moisture content inside the skin. Certain oils, for example, hemp oil tends to leave the skin a tad bit dry. In massages, this property is usually not preferred. Certain oils are successful in hydrating layers of your skin thus adding a certain smooth texture to your skin. Massage in oils such as almond oil, olive oil etc. can leave dry and damaged skin feeling refreshed and replenished.

PURITY:

Filtered oils are better for application purposes mainly because they are more refined. Also, their quality is better than that of greasy oils. Extra virgin cold pressed oil is considered ideal in most massages as it is one of the purest oils and is also extremely efficient to retain the nutrients in the oil. While choosing massage oils, there are broadly two categories mainly basic oils and aromatherapy oils.

Some important basic oils:

Almond oil: Since ages, almonds have been considered as a boon to mankind. The nut is high in antioxidants and vitamin E and is used to solve a variety of beauty and hair issues. Almond oil locks the moisture content of the skin without blocking the skin pores. Some other functions include improving skin complexion and cures dry, irritable skin. Almond oil is also said to reverse the ageing process by renewing skin cells and eliminating any accumulation of dead cells. It also helps to combat inflammation and redness of the skin and helps in vanishing cracks on the surface of the skin. Another important function of almond oil is to get rid of sun tan and preventing the occurrence of acne and pimples. Also being fine textured oil, the oil does not leave the skin feeling cloggy or greasy.

Grape seed oil: Grape seed oil which is extracted from the seeds of grapes is typical massage oil. The oil has a light colour. Grape seed oil is usually combined with other oils to maximize the effect of massages. It’s viscous nature and moisturizing properties help in skin repair and acts as an antioxidant. Vitamins C and E in grape seed oil repairs cellular and tissue damage. It can also soothe tense muscles and varicose veins.

Some important aromatherapy oils:

Lavender oil: Lavender oil is known for it's supreme relaxing and soothing effect on the body. It is used for a variety of reasons such as to cleanse any cut marks, rashes on the skin and bruises. Lavender oil is one of the most fragrant perfumes that relax the mind emotionally and the body physically. Since lavender oil has antiseptic properties, it also helps deal with acne. In today’s world, air pollution has taken its toll on everybody’s skin. Lavender oil helps detoxify the skin and acts as a shield for the skin.

Tea tree oil:  Apart from being massage oil, tea tree oil is the best solution for blemishes, acne and other skin disorders.
