What is asthma?

Asthma is basically an allergic reaction which constricts the air passage of the patient. An asthma attack causes the passages inside the lungs to swell up with inflammation. It also makes the body produce more mucus in the wall lining of the airways resulting in clogs.  All these effects combined prevent the oxygen from entering the lungs, thus choking the person. The symptoms include intense wheezing, tightness in the chest, unstoppable coughing, breathlessness, etc. In some cases, the lips and fingernail might turn blue indicating lack of oxygen. If proper care and attention are not given, asthma attack can lead to death.
