Supplements for the Brain

Also referred to as Amazing Wizard, Pandora’s Magical Box or the Celestial Computer, the human brain is embedded with unaccountable potentials. Hence, it is very imperative that we take care of the brain and keep it healthy by using organic supplements.

Vitamins

We are all aware how essential Vitamin D is for bone strengthening. It also prevents certain cancers, depression and improves memory. What we are not aware of is the important role that it plays in helping the immune system remove the abnormal protein, beta-amyloid, from the brain which is associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

Considering that this vitamin D is vital for memory, learning and other cognitive functions, it is surprising that an estimated 1 billion people are vitamin D deficient. A regular supplement for maintaining optimal levels of this vitamin, for better brain functioning, is crucial.

Another vitamin which is associated with the memory is Vitamin B12 and is mostly found to be deficient in people who do not take meat as animal food is the source of this memory enhancing vitamin. Those having a deficiency of Vitamin B12 would do well to take supplements to replenish the deficit vitamin.

Vinpocetine

A vasodilator, Vinpocetine comes from the Periwinkle plant and has the power to enhance memory and overall mental health. It increases the brain’s usage of oxygen by increasing the blood flowing to the brain and guards the brain from the damage of free radicals. Only recently available, Vinpocetine shows promising results in people suffering from Alzheimer’s.

docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

DHA, an important source from which the brain forms cell membranes, constitutes a great portion of the brain. It is one of the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil and is believed to increase memory. In order to improve brain functions and cerebral blood flow, one can take fatty oil supplements. With the improvement in DHA supplements, it has been found that loss of memory, dementia, depression, Alzheimer’s disease and attention deficit disorder can be controlled.

Antioxidants

The brain is highly inclined to suffer the damage of free radicals which is the reason why it needs antioxidants. The antioxidants neutralize free radical damage thereby protecting the brain. It also prevents the brain cells from ageing before time. This would explain why antioxidants are so important in a human body. Plant foods are the main sources of antioxidants but as consumption of those plants, which are high in antioxidants, is less taking an antioxidant supplement becomes a must. In addition, these supplements contain high concentrations of the extracts and would, therefore, provide more antioxidant power than is possible from a diet.

Bacopa Monnieri

The Bacopa Monnieri plant or Brahmi as it is also known has found use in Ayurvedic medicine since ages.  The active compounds in this herb, known as bacosides, have been found to be effective for memory. The bacosides have the capability to influence the brain cells in regenerating brain tissue and hence taking Brahmi supplements enhance memory power.

Alpha GPC

This supplement has been found to be an effective cognitive enhancer in addition to the fact that it has found importance as a brain booster too. It is believed that this can protect and also repair damaged cells and also plays an important role in improving the efficiency of communication within the brain’s neurons. As it helps in the formation of the primary neurotransmitter, which is involved in learning and memory – acetylcholine, Alpha GPC supplements can result in boosting the memory, increased mental clarity and faster speed in thinking.

Ginkgo biloba

This herb comes from the maidenhair tree and is used in many brain boosters. It is believed that this herb dilates the blood vessels and also contains flavonoids and terpenoids, antioxidants that prevent the brain cells from damage. It is used to deal with poor concentration, headaches and forgetfulness. Studies have shown that it has the ability to improve mental functioning in people who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Though there are many supplements inundating market place, choosing the right supplement for the brain can help improve memory and protect the brain from mentally declining.
