Anemia is a state that occurs when an individual does not have enough healthy red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body. Iron is used to produce red blood cells, which help store and carry oxygen in the blood. If you have fewer red blood cells than it is normal;, your organs and tissues won't get as much oxygen as they usually would. Anemia also can occur if your hemoglobin don't contain enough hemoglobin (HEE-muh-glow-bin). Hemoglobin is an iron-rich protein that gives red color of blood. This protein helps red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body.
