Alopecia areata is a type of hair loss that occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles. Alopecia is the medical term for baldness; there are various types of alopecia, including alopecia areata. In some cases, total baldness develops. In many cases, the hair re-grows, typically after several months. In the majority of cases, hair falls out in small patches around the size of a quarter. For most people, the hair loss is nothing more than a few patches, though in some cases it can be more extreme.

 

Symptoms of alopecia areata

     The condition occurs when white blood cells attack the cells in hair follicles, causing them to shrink and dramatically slow down hair production. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease. Normally the immune system protects the body against infection and disease. In an autoimmune disease, the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks some part of your own body. Normally, the immune system defends your body against foreign invaders, such as viruses and bacteria. If you have alopecia areata, however, your immune system mistakenly attacks your hair follicles. Hair follicle is which hair grows. . A person's genetic makeup, combined with other factors, triggers this form of hair loss.
