Vitamins and minerals are necessary to keep the immune system of the body running in proper condition. The vitamins like A, B complex, C, D, E and K help to boost the immune system. Most of these vitamins are found in the natural food products. For instance citrus fruits like lime, grapefruit, oranges etc. are very high invitamin C  which is well known for its immune boosting and anti oxidant properties. Let us look at the role that different vitamins play in enhancing the immune system and other systems of the body.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a water soluble compound and hence can be taken in any quantity. This is because the excess vitamin C will be eliminated from the body in the form of urine and stools. It is a compound which is necessary for growth and development according to many medical experts. Oxidation can lead to inflammatory conditions, cancer and heart disease and the vitamin C negates the effects of oxidation due to its anti oxidant properties.

Some medical experts also believe that high dosage of Vitamin C can protect you from flu and colds and there is continuous research being done on this aspect. Fruits which are high in vitamin C include citrus fruits, strawberries, tomatoes, green peppers, cantaloupe, broccoli, red peppers, leafy green vegetables, sweet potatoes, and white potatoes. Vegetables like cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, winter squash, and cabbages are also rich in vitamin c.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is readily found in beta carotene, has anti oxidant properties which protect the body cells from the damages caused due to oxidation. This in turn helps in the prevention of degenerative disease which occur in old age. This vitamin also helps in improving the vision and helps improve the softness of the skin, soft tissues and mucous membrane. Oils of the halibut and cod fish, meat, kidney, eggs, liver, milk and milk products are all rich in vitamin A. However, you should eat these foods in moderation because they are high in saturated fats and cholesterol.

Vitamin B complex

These vitamins help in the growth and development of the body because they convert the food into energy which in turn fuels the bodily functions. The B vitamins protect the body from many ailments, according to many medical professionals. Vitamin B 9 is also known as folic acid and reduces the risk of some types of cancers. Vegetables, eggs, liver, seeds and yeast are rich sources of vitamin B.

Most of the vitamins and minerals necessary for the proper functioning of the body can be found in regular food products. However, usually our consumption of these food products is not as much as required for getting the right daily dosage of these vitamins and minerals. This is the reason that most people nowadays are resorting to capsules and pills containing them as supplements. Some of these supplements are also made from natural ingredients and are easily available in online stores.
