It is the arteries in our body, which transport blood from the heart to other parts of the body. This blood contains oxygen too, which keeps us going. Arteries, which are basically blood vessels carrying blood, consist of three layers – intima (the inner layer), media (a layer of muscle that handles the high pressure from the heart) and adventitia (the connective tissue that links arteries to nearby tissues).

It is necessary to keep the inner walls of the arteries for keeping the heart healthy. At times, the buildup of plaque on the inner walls leads to clogging, which further hinders proper flow of blood. The plaque basically is made from substances like fat, calcium, cholesterol, calcium, cellular waste and fibrin.

That is why people suffering from cholesterol and obesity woes are often at a higher risk of heart related ailments. Besides, blockage in arteries can also be caused due to high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes.

Well, there are several foods, which can help in preventing the arteries from clogging. Let us get to know about a few of them.

  1. Garlic

Chewing garlic cloves is one amazing way to unclog blocked arteries. As per a study done by Centre for Cardiovascular Pharmacology in Mainz, Germany, daily consumption of garlic helps in preventing the hardening of an artery called aorta. This is basically due to the reduction in the level of LDL or bad cholesterol. This study also highlighted the positive effects of garlic on the cardiovascular health in old age.

So, chew at least four raw cloves of garlic every day on empty stomach. Besides, incorporate in your soups, stews and curries.

Garlic is one amazing ingredient used to enhance the flavor of dishes, be it Indian or Italian. It is commonly used in India in pickled form too.

  1. Pomegranate

This exotic red-colored fruit is also helpful in cleansing of arteries. A 2005 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concludes that pomegranate contains high level of antioxidants (especially vitamin C and polyphenols), which boost the production of nitric oxide. This nitric oxide ensures proper flow of blood by keeping the arteries open. Also, the fruit helps in hindering the formation of plaque on the walls of arteries.

Drinking a glass of pomegranate juice for breakfast daily can not only prevent clogged arteries but also boosts platelet count.

Eating fresh pomegranate fruit can help in good digestion as well. It is due to the presence of fiber in it, which boosts good metabolism in the body.

  1. Turmeric

Turmeric is a wonder spice for sure. Owing to its anti-inflammatory properties, it helps in preventing any blockage in the arteries. Besides, the presence of curcumin further helps in reducing inflammation in the arteries. It is this problem of inflammation, which is the main reason behind hardening of the arteries.

Curcumin, as per 2009 study by French researchers, can reduce the fat deposits in the arteries by up to 26 per cent.

Turmeric also contains vitamin B6, which maintains the level of homocysteine. Its high level can lead to formation of plaque in the blood vessels. Drinking a glass of milk with a pinch of turmeric in it is really good for heart.

Turmeric is an amazing beauty ingredient as well. It helps in reducing acne, lightening scars and enhancing complexion. Therefore, it is used in several homemade ubtans.

  1. Avocados

Several studies prove that avocados help in reducing the level of LDL or bad cholesterol in the body. This happens because of the presence of soluble fiber in it. Fiber ensures good digestion in the body and keeps you full for longer period of time. A good digestion means that there is no excess storage of fat in the body, which can lead to cholesterol deposits. Basically, a high level of LDL cholesterol results in buildup of plaque in the arteries, thus leading to their blockage. On the other hand, avocados increase the level of good or HDL cholesterol in the body.

Avocados contain vitamin E, which prevents oxidation of cholesterol, and potassium, which help in lowering high blood pressure.

So, consume one avocado daily to keep your heart healthy.
