Carrier oil is vegetable oil which is basically derived from the fatty portion of the plants, fatty portions like kernels, nuts and seeds. The “Carrier oils” are so called because of their property to carry the essential oil into the skin.Each carrier oil has its own peculiarities and therapeutic properties; the choice of oil depends upon the area of application and benefit you are seeking from them. Some oils are beneficial if consumed while others are beneficial if used externally.

Some of commonly used carrier oils are given below along with their benefits,

  1. Avocado Oil (Persea Americana)

Avocado oil is very good nourishing oil for hair and skin, rich in essential and trace minerals along with vitamin A, this oil is used by diluting with a low viscosity oil in blends and formulations. It has a deep olive green colour, aromatic in nature, sweetish smell with a hint of fat and nut.It has a shelf life of 12 months.

Virgin coconut oil has a recognized fragrance of coconuts; therapeutically this oil is highly emollient and moisturizing for the skin and hair. Olive oil’s high viscosity, texture and benefits make it for use in massaging in spite of its mildly unpleasant aroma. If you are about to buy olive oil make sure it is 100 % organic and cold pressed virgin oil. This oil is medium green in colour and has a shelf life of about 2 years.

  1. Peanut oil (Arachishypogeae)

Peanut oil is the most widely used oil, especially in cooking, but it should be used with caution as there are a lot of people with peanut allergy and this oil should be avoided by them in all cases. As it has oily nature and low viscosity, it is suitable to be used in massage blends. Some studies have shown that this is a good oil for people suffering from arthritis.

Sesame seed oil, popularly known as “The Queen of Oils” as it has been used for thousands of years as healing oil. Sesame oil is mentioned in Vedas as excellent for Humans. Sesame seed oil is good choice for massage as it has natural anti-bacterial properties against common skin pathogens. It should be blended with other carrier oils as it very strong on its own. It is pale yellow in colour and has shelf life of 12 months.

  1. Sunflower oil (Helianthus annuus)

Sunflower is considered to be all-purpose carrier oil which is affordable to all mankind. It has a positive effect in both prevention and treatment of central nervous system (CNS) diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy etc. It can also be used as massaging oil since it is rich in anti-oxidant vitamin E. It is low viscosity clear yellowish oil with a shelf life of 12 months.
