Women have a special fondness for hair. Whether its Rapunzel’s mane or elaborate hairdos of Snow White; fascination with hair starts early. Our fondest memories are those of grandmothers oiling and braiding hair, decorating them with hair pretties and ribbons.

Needless to say, the sight of hair falling out in clumps can be distressing. Our hair follicles grow naturally and a little hair fall is inconsequential. But according to the experts, if you lose more than 200 strands a day, your hair need attention.

Hair loss can happen due to a multitude of reasons like pollution, genetic predisposition, hormonal imbalance, excessive stress, smoking, PCOS, anemia or even artificial hair treatments like coloring and straightening.

Here are a few simple remedies to counter hair loss:

  1. Hot oil massage

Buy a good quality Organic Hair Oil and warm it up slightly. With the help of your finger tips, start massaging it into the scalp and gradually coat your head generously with oil. Continue massaging for a few minutes as it improves blood circulation. Follow up with steaming hair with a hot towel for couple of minutes and then wash.

Follow this massage routine at least thrice a week to stop hair fall.

  1. Amla, Shikakai and Reetha shampoo

Amla is a rich source of vitamin C and which stops hair fall. It also contains fatty acids that nourish and moisturize hair. Flavonoids and proteins present in amla encourage faster hair growth. Its antioxidant properties strengthen the roots of hair and act as a natural conditioner.

Reetha is a natural cleansing agent which cures the scalp of infections without causing any irritation. Its active components nourish hair, keep them soft and smooth and bring back their natural shine.

The word Shikakai literally translates into ‘fruit for hair’. It is effective in removing dandruff and other scalp related infections, nourishes hair and helps retain the natural hair oil.

  1. Aloe Vera

Dandruff or any other kind of scalp irritations of infections can clog the pores of scalp resulting on weakening of roots and hair fall. It also slows down the process of hair growth. Dryness is another contributor to hair fall.

Aloe Vera contains active substances which heal scalp infections and moisturize it. It also reduces dryness and improves blood circulation which promotes hair growth.

Aloe vera can be used in form of hair mask, shampoo, oil or conditioner. It takes at least a few weeks for these changes to become noticeable, therefore one must continue using it for at least a couple of months for best results.

  1. Licorice

In 3rd century B.C., Egyptians discovered the effect of Licorice Root on scalp and hair.  It has properties which alleviate dryness, remove debris and open up pores to promote hair growth.

Quick tip: Here is a simple DIY mask using licorice which works wonders for hair fall. Grind the licorice root finely and mix it with milk and saffron. Massage it gently into the scalp and leave it overnight. Wash it off with a gentle shampoo.

Another great way to gain the benefits of licorice is to drink licorice tea couple of times a day.

  1. Flax Seeds

Flax Seeds are a rich source of vitamin E, omega 3 fatty acids and minerals like calcium, magnesium and zinc and lignins.

Omega 3 fatty acids improve the elasticity of hair and make them stronger. They also reduce inflammation and strengthen the roots. Minerals like zinc and calcium nourish the hair from within and hydrate them, preventing split ends and premature graying. Lignins improve the metabolism and make sure that all nutrients are absorbed into the blood stream and hair derive sufficient nutrition.

You can powder flax seed and add to your breakfast cereal, snack on them as it is, or sprinkle them over salads, pastas and soups to add that extra oomph!
