It is quite embarrassing to have dandruff in the scalp when you are attending an interview or joining for a dinner. The itchy scalp can make you and your peers uncomfortable while white flakes of dead skin on the scalp can freely fall out or disperse in the air around. Treating dandruff isn't a mystery. It is a valid medical problem that can be helped out and managed by adopting certain methods.

Dandruff on the scalp is caused by a fungus named Malassezia which feeds on oily matter and dead skin. This microbe is very common. Usually it doesn't cause much trouble but when it grows in large it turns to be problematic. This fungus mainly breaks the oil into fatty acids which irritate the scalp. The main reason for itchiness and dryness in the scalp is accumulation of dead cells for a long period of time. The  fatty acids on the scalp cause mild dandruff and as the fungus grows more skin cells are produced.

The fungus is very much active in humid climate and excess of sweat. It slows down during winter and monsoon. However, the cold winds during winter can make the scalp dry and increase flaking of skin. So dandruff is almost a yearly problem. Other than medication one can use easy home remedies to treat dandruff.

Do not apply oil on the hair and leave it for long

Many people often like to apply oil during the day because it keeps the hair manageable and shiny. But this could cause dandruff when oil is exposed to dirt and pollution. It is best to apply hair before sleeping and wash it in the morning. Or else one can apply oil and leave it for about an hour and wash to get the best results rather than leaving it for long hours or days.

 Vinegar

Vinegar is effective in cleaning the scalp by killing fungus and bacteria. It removes the dry skin and leaves a fresh skin. The acidity in the vinegar reduces flaking and most importantly it is mild on the skin and hair. It can be used much like a face wash.

Neem

Neem has extensive medical benefits. It has antifungal and antibacterial properties. Neem oil can be applied on scalp to treat dandruff and improve scalp health.

Tea tree oil

Many of the herbal medications use tea tree oil as their ingredient. It  has fungal and anti bacterial property which fights against the fungus. There are also shampoos  available with tree oil which are helpful to wash dandruff.
