A newborn baby’s skin is delicate. It is easily affected by changes in temperature, humidity and irritants. You have to protect the soft skin against environmental changes and also to harsh cleansers as you wash him. To keep the skin safe, you will have to make sure that his skin is moisturized and protect it from dryness.
There are many commercially prepared baby moisturizers in the market. But these contain toxic products which the baby’s skin can absorb easily. To protect your baby from these harmful toxins, use natural moisturizing agents or make your own moisturizing lotion at home.
You can make your own moisturizer for your baby for which you just need to combine a water base with an oil base and use an emulsifying agent to bind them since water and oil do not mix. Natural oils are the best options for your homemade moisturizer. Though olive oil and almond oil are best for dry skin as they are strong oils, you can use sesame oil, avocado oil or wheat germ oil for normal skin as your oil base.
There are many water bases, which you can either use alone or you can use with a combination of other water bases. Some healthy water bases that you could use include aloe juice, honey, glycerin, herbal teas and herbal infusions and distilled water. Aloe juice has anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and antibiotic properties. Honey and glycerin are known humectants, which means that they can draw moisture from the environment and then bind it to the epidermis. Herbs contain essential antioxidants.
To bind the water base and the oil base, use emulsifiers such as beeswax or borax.
Though your baby’s skin is soft enough and hardly needs any extra cream or moisturizer, however you can ensure that his skin stays healthy with coconut oil, the perfect natural moisturizer. Some babies develop dry patches in the folds of their necks. Dabbing a little coconut oil in the affected area helps to keep the area moisturized and protects your baby from irritation.
Above all, bathing a newborn baby frequently tends to remove his natural oils from the skin. It leaves the baby’s skin dry and aggravates eczema. Newborns hardly get dirty and so need to be bathed not more than three times a week during the first year of their life. In between these days, you just need to clean his mouth and clean his diaper area with water.
Your baby’s skin tends to absorb as well as lose water faster than adults. That is why his skin needs to be kept moisturized especially after bathing. Click here to know more about natural baby moisturizers.
